A free live calculus game for your class

Asymptote is a free calculus game you run from the projector. Open a room, pick limits, derivatives, integrals or applications, and students join on their phones with a six-digit code and a nickname - no student accounts, nothing to install. Everyone gets the same problems against one clock, answers are typed rather than picked, and at the end you get a list of what the class missed.

How it works

  1. 1. Open a room at playasymptote.com/teach (a free account). Pick a game, one topic or several, how hard the hardest problem gets (d1 to d20) - with examples to check - and anything from 1 to 30 minutes. Turn on random names if your class needs them.
  2. 2. Put it on the projector. It shows a six-digit code and a QR code.
  3. 3. Students join at playasymptote.com/join, or by scanning. Their names pop up on your screen.
  4. 4. Press Start. Same problems for everyone, in the same order, easiest first. Wrong answers show the right one, because the point is to learn it.
  5. 5. Review. A podium for the winners, then the most-missed problems with their answers, for you.

Total setup: about as long as it takes to find the HDMI cable. Possibly less.

Three games

Race

Everyone gets the same problems. Most right answers wins.

Teams

The room splits into teams. Every right answer counts for yours.

Gold Rush

Every right answer opens a chest: gold, a double or a triple, a loss, a steal from someone else - or nothing at all.

Nobody has ever been excited about a worksheet. Quite a few people have been excited about stealing 40 gold from the person sitting next to them.

Topics

Pick one topic or several, and set the hardest problem anywhere from d1 (first week of Calc 1) to d20 (multivariable and differential equations), with examples at every level. Problems are drawn from a bank of over 20,000, so a second round is not a rerun of the first.

Questions

Is it free?
Yes. Make a free account and you can host rooms of up to 30 players, as often as you like. A Monthly, Yearly or Founder Pass removes the 30-player cap, for a big class or a whole year group.
Do students need accounts or an app?
No. Students open playasymptote.com/join on any phone, tablet or Chromebook, type the six-digit code on your screen and pick a nickname. There is nothing to install and no email to give.
What does it cover?
Limits, derivatives (power, product, quotient and chain rules, trig, exponential and log, implicit differentiation, tangent slopes), integrals (antiderivatives, definite integrals, u-substitution, integration by parts) and applications (area between curves, related rates, optimisation, volumes). That is most of AP Calculus AB and the core of BC.
Is it multiple choice?
No. Students type the answer, like 3x^2 or sin(x)/x, and it is checked as maths, so equivalent forms count. Nobody gets a derivative right by guessing C.
What do I get at the end?
A podium, and a report of every problem the class answered, the most-missed first, with the right answer beside it. It is the five minutes of re-teaching you would have wanted to do anyway, already sorted.
What if somebody picks a rude name?
Turn on random names and every student gets an animal name like Brave Otter instead. Typed names go through the same filter as the rest of the site, you can remove anyone from the lobby with one tap, and you can lock the room once your class is in.
What do you store about students?
The nickname they type, the answers they give in the room (for your report), and a random id for their browser so a phone that locks can rejoin its seat. No names, no emails, no accounts.

Try it with your next class

Or open a room now and join it from your own phone to see what students see.
